Along a small greenway (Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River) off Rt 29
(Colesville Rd) today, my wife and I saw or heard:

Hairy woodpecker (2)
Northern Parula (2)
Blue-gray gnatcatcher (feeding a voracious young cowbird)
Ovenbird
Wood thrush
Baltimore oriole
Red-eyed vireo
Acadian flycatcher
Great-crested flycatcher

We also saw a few species of butterflies and an abundance of Ebony jewelwings,
one of the more beautiful damselflies. The area is unfortunately under rapid
invasion from tree-of-heaven, mile-a-minute, Japanese stiltgrass, porcelain
berry, and many more non-natives. If you keep your head up and don't glance at
the poor understory, the walk is quite pretty.
