Hi all,
I birded on the Eastern Shore on Sunday (25 September). I Started at
Assateague where upon arriving at dawn, there appeared to have been a
fallout of GRAY CATBIRDs as evidenced by a puddle near one of the entrance
roads into the campground that was surrounded by 16 of them! By the time I
had finished birding Bayside I had tallied 116. Bayside was quite
productive as far as diversity though numbers of birds was a bit low.
Bayside Campground included some nice surprises including a juvenile LARK
SPARROW and a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW that were hanging out together near the
septic dump on the west end. They would flush together and return to the
same bare spot on the ground, when I left the area around 1130, they were
still there. I also lucked into a juvenile CONNECTICUT WARBLER that briefly
popped up in response to pishing, this bird was a couple hundred yards from
the western most entrance to the campground. I checked a few more spots
before heading to the north end of the island. I walked shell road without
any surprises, the best bird here being a juvenile dark morph PARASITIC
JAEGER that was harrasing a few gulls during a seawatch at the end of the
road. Skimmer Island had a good number of BLACK SKIMMERs, but it appeared
that most all of the other birds were off foraging. I headed west from there
checking turf farms for grasspipers without success. Hurlock held an
impressive 82 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, and some funky looking male NORTHERN
PINTAILs that were molting out of eclipse plumage. All and all a great day
to be out!! Some complete lists are below-
