With watch-sites north of us reporting Golden Eagles on the move, I decided to set up my spotting scope at Cromwell Valley on Sunday morning in hopes of pulling one in, perhaps at a distance. At 9:35 AM I spotted a large dark bird coming from the ENE near the Hickey School smokestack. As it reached Cromwell Valley it flew low over the fields just north of the Children's Garden, disappearing below the nearest tree-line and prompting several Crows to call excitedly. When it reappeared seconds later I was stunned to see an immature Golden Eagle flying directly towards the watch-site at tree-top level. This GE flew across the valley, directly above me, to the BGE power line ridge where a local Redtail began to harass it. It then gained altitude and headed SW down valley. All of this took 6 minutes to transpire. WHEW!
A painfully clear blue sky all day made us work for every raptor seen, and careful scanning by our small crew paid off with an enjoyable flight!
