This morning Judy Harding and I rescued a Grasshopper Sparrow and a White-throated Sparrow while monitoring along the Lights Out Baltimore route. Both birds were window strike victims; but seemed to be alert and energetic after capture. Four White-throated Sparrow and a Hermit Thrush flew away compromised after flying into ground level windows. Judy and I watched the Hermit Thrush crash into the glass, fly in a circle, then return to hit the glass again. After the second strike it started to fall -- it seemed to tumble against the glass in slow motion for several feet before righting itself. Somehow it managed to fly to a nearby tree. We also collected one dead Song Sparrow and eight dead White-throated Sparrow. Along the way we enjoyed many live birds including: a super close-up of a Winter Wren (a nice three minute break); two more Hermit Thrush; three Dark-eyed Junco; a Swamp Sparrow and over 25 White-throated Sparrow.

Although our fall monitoring season ends today; it seems for too busy to stop.
