Morning all,
A short but productive walk about the yard this morning produced a new species. As I checked out my neighbor's farm pond, several hundred yards downhill, I noticed a single bird that looked like an American Coot. I hurried back to the house (as fast as my plantar fasciatus would allow), got the scope out of the closet, assembled it while walking back to the fenceline, and set it up, only to find, nothing! Arrrggghhh!
The light was pretty awful, with the pond in early morning shadows, but I finally managed to relocate the bird preening in the cattails along the edge, then it finally moved out to the middle and began diving. Whhheeew! Yard bird #143 for my personal list, number 144 overall.
The only other bird of interest was a single flyby Common Grackle, my FOS here.
Good birding,
