Somewhere near Taneytown in Carroll County around Feb. 19- Feb. 25, 1995 there were at least 5 SEOW's being seen. I don't have the exact location written down, but I do recall my 2 pre-teen daughters shamelessly hawking Girl Scout cookies to birders that were lined up and and down the road as they watched the owls and harriers over the fields. Ahhh, good times...

I don't recall the year- probably the early 90's - The late Rick Blom helped
s on the Carroll County winter count and found a field south of Taneytown
hat had them. Quite a show. Rick loved "weedy-seedy fields" in winter. They
ttract things like Short-ears and Harriers. I miss Rick.

ho will probably be there tonight because he likes Short-ears in Carroll

The PA Short-eared Owl extravaganza was Feb 2005.
t the bottom of this message after the current
hread, I posted a 2005 message thread, with the
riginal location reported by the late Gary Smyle.
Hope this helps ...

route 15 in PA, about 10-15 minutes from there.
It's not that far from Taneytown so perhaps this
will be a good year for viewing short-eared owls
in this area. Is it too much to hope for a few snowy owls too? :-)

Saw over a dozen short-eared owls today at
12:15pm. Also the leucistic rtha, and a pair of
rough-legged hawks. Just north of Bigham Road
along Pumping Sta Rd there is a farm on the left
with a pond beside it. In the pond were 2 pairs
of hooded mergansers and a pair of common mergansers.
A sharpie flew over Steinwahr Rd just before
Gettysburg. Unfortunately my lunch hour was
over.... If anyone is in the area, there has
been consistently a pair of red-headed
woodpeckers along Confederate Avenue bet PA116
and Pumping Sta Rd. If anyone would like info
on a pair of nesting ravens, let me know.
