The fortieth Bowie Christmas Bird Count was held today, January 2,
2012. The preliminary count is 92 species. The best birds were (one
each) Cackling Goose, Rough-legged Hawk, House Wren, and Northern
Shrike. The shrike is a new species for the count. Unfortunately, it
is on a closed portion of the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center
and is not visible from anywhere with public access. The Rough-legged
Hawk was in the open area being developed just west of Freeway Airport.

Other good birds were Redhead (3), Monk Parakeet, Merlin (2), Laughing
Gull (2), and House Wren.

We had new high counts for Gadwall 24(previous high=10), American
Wigeon 7(6), Green-winged Teal 39(22), Pied-billed Grebe 26(20), Coot
46 (33) and Robin 20,005(4807).

It looks like we'll be doing this again on January 1, 2013 so come and
join us -- we always need more help. And thanks to everyone who
participated this year.
