On a quick walk around the circle (Froude Circle, Cabin John, Mont Co) at around 11:30 today I encountered a pileated woodpecker and a calling (female) Eastern Towhee. The pileated isn't unusual, but I haven't seen that many this winter either. The calling towhee? Unexpected - I looked at the field guide and they winter here but I haven't seen them very often in January.

Last night the Barred Owl continued its almost-nightly serenade. Hope it stays around like it did last year.
