Hey everyone,

Jared Satchell, Tom Field ,Geraldine King, and myself spent most of
yesterday on the Potomac River in Washington County. Hoping for lots
of waterfowl, we were disappointed. American Black Duck and Common
Mergansers were the only ducks observed. A Double-crested Cormorant
sitting on the rocks in the river at Harper's Ferry was a nice
observation. A Tree Swallow flock was working the river at Weverton.
Along the river plain Winter Wrens, Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers, and
White-breasted Nuthatches were seen along with the more common
Carolina Chickadees and Tufted Titmice. Of note were blooming
Harbinger-of-spring at Mountain Lock and at Snyder's Landing we
observed blooming Sharp and Round-lobed Hepatica, Bloodroot, and Early
Saxifrage. Dutchman's Breeches and toothwort were in bud. We found
numerous Walking Ferns along the limestone cliffs.

I just posted the first of four parts of an identification treatment
on the Trilliums of the Mid Atlantic Region on my blog Mid Atlantic
Nature. It can be viewed at www.midatlanticnature.blogspot.com. If
you like wildflowers go and check it out. There's lots of great
photos and cool info.
