Walking with some friends up the river trail from Great Falls this
afternoon,we were looking at all the large stick nests in the trees on Conn
Island. I have noticed the many Great-Blue Herons flying in and out of
these nests for years and thought it was just a large heron rookery.
Today, however, we noticed that while some of the nests had herons in and
around them, that some of the other nests had Double-crested Cormorants
nesting in and sitting by the nests. Often there were nesting herons and
nesting cormorants in adjacent nests in the same tree. I had not noticed
that both these species nested in the same rookery on Conn Island before.
There seemed to be large numbers of each species nesting very close
together. At the southern tip of the island, an adult bald eagle was seen
what appeared to be feeding some chicks as well. Interesting observations
all.
