Protocol: Traveling
1.5 mile(s)
Comments: Conditions: 56-61°F, Clear, Wind: N at 10 mph, Humidity: 17%. I
started out at Big Pool Bluff, visited the Beaver Dam, then met up with Jay
Sheppard. We followed the outlet channel to the Little Patuxent River and then
made our way back through the lowlands to Big Pool Bluff. We talked with the
neighbors for a bit and just before we took off, we showed them the immature ~4
yr old Bald Eagle flying overhead. We then went to the main entrance and
followed the trail to the SE Observation Point. A group of 4 walkers stopped by
and looked through our scopes at Great Blue Heron and Green-winged Teal. After
checking around the corner from the beaver lodge, Jay headed back and I
continued on. I made my way following the trail up to Water Lily Way, then over
to the back of the condos to look for the nest that Jay found (without success).
Finally, made my way back to the main entrance. Early at Big Pool Bluff, I
believe I watched crows chase a Barred Owl. Later, Jay saw one fly and we both
heard a pair calling. I also watched a crow harrass and chase an American
Kestral. Virginia Bluebells are blooming along the outlet channel as it winds
its way through the lowlands to the Little Patuxent River! Last but not least,
some turtles were out sunning - while others were waiting for the temperature to
climb. There was a huge Snapping Turtle in the vicinity of one of the Lesser
Yellowlegs and a few Green-winged Teal that were were observing.
