Yesterday I birded in northern Carroll County with Joe Hanfman.
Highlights were:
Wild Turkey - 1 in field at edge of woods on Hapes Mill Road, 1 crossing
Chapel Road just west of Western Chapel Road.
American Bittern - 1 flushed by a goose that we accidentally flushed from a
nest at Union Mills wetland on Brown Road. The bittern flew in circles for
at least five minutes before dropping into the marsh again.
Harrier - 1 flew at grass top level across Keysville Road just north of
Sixes Bridge Road.
Kestrel - 2 on Bowers Road near Harney and one on John Shirk Road.
Killdeer - 2 adults and 2 large downy young on John Shirk Road.
Spotted Sandpiper - 1 at the pond on John Shirk Road.
Greater Yellowlegs - 3 dropped into a shallow grassy area of the Monoccy
River just above Starners Dam.
Snipe - a few at the Union Mills wetland on Brown Road.
Red-headed Woodpecker - 1 on Teeter Road just south of Ruggles Road & 1
heard at the Flickinger Road swamp.
Kingbird - 1, heard only, at the Union Mills wetland.
Purple Martin - at least 3 at a box in Union Bridge, none at the multi-box
site near New Windsor
Parula - 1 heard singing at the Flickinger Road swamp.
Vesper Sparrow - 1 seen of two singing on Baptist Road near Harney, 1 heard
on Hapes Mill Road.
Savannah Sparrow - 1 heard only, singing on Sharrett Road.
Grasshopper Sparrow - 1 seen on Sharrett Road, an early county record by
one day.
White-crowned Sparrow - seen in several places, probably migrating through
the state now.
Meadowlark - seen in several places.
