I am (finally) going on my first birding trip to Western Maryland. I'd love
to get some favorite birding site recommendations from others.

I'll be staying in Cumberland and probably won't go further west than
Savage River State Forest on this two-day trip.

My main interest is successional/edge/grassland habitat, but the state
parks are (I assume) predominately woodland habitat. I'm an active hiker
and enjoy birding on more rugged terrain. In addition to the usual birding
gear I'll be taking a set of maps, a reliable GPS and trekking poles.

Should I wear bear bells as well as bug repellent?

I plan to go a long morning hike in one area, perhaps drive a bit and then
do another long afternoon hike.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
