Subject: Poplar Island Sightings from May 7, 2012
This report is submitted on behalf of Jan Reese of Talbot County, who
continues to periodically survey the flora and fauna of the Paul Sarbanes
Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island.
The summary of bird observations that follows was taken by permission
from the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers and MD Port Administration, May 2012,
Fauna Monitoring Report for the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration
Project at Poplar Island.
The census shows about 3500 shorebirds which is about 1000
more than the late April census, suggesting the occluded sky and strong ESE
wind during full moon on 6 May may have delayed the usual abbreviated north
transit movement during that event. The birds may be waiting until better
conditions prevail, possibly in the days leading up to the new moon on 20
May.
