Outside of my office building in north Silver Spring/Calverton, there is a dead Pileated Woodpecker on the sidewalk. Its red crest is pale and rather short, so perhaps this is a young bird?

I just went back outside to look at it more closely and there is no obvious (to me) cause of death. If this were CSI: Crime Scene Investigation I would point out that it was lying beside a spotlight also lying on its side (usually sits upright on the ground, not up on the building.) I have no idea whether the light was upright previously or not.

When I went outside just now to double-check it, I witnessed quite a skirmish between a Mockingbird and a Starling fighting a Crow so aggressively that the crow was losing feathers that floated down and landed next to the Pileated.
