A big surprise while looking out the window from the cubicle farm at work
today...an Eastern Kingbird perched on a railing, making an occasional
flycatching run among the more usual house sparrows and starlings. This
was in front of the Geico building in Friendship Heights, Chevy Chase
(Montgomery), on Willard Ave near the intersection of Friendship Heights
Blvd. Kingbirds nest just a few miles away along the C&O Canal, but I've
never seen one this far into a mostly urban neighborhood.
It's possible this bird has been around for more than a week. A colleague
saw a kingbird on the opposite side of the building two Saturdays ago, but
I hadn't found it the one time I walked around that end of the property.
